BREEDING:

Obtaining Pairs
There are several way to obtain pairs
1. Buy six 5cm fish, allow them to mature and pair off naturally you would be very unlucky to not get a pair from 6 fish.

2. Purchase a pair but be careful, a lot of females will practice spawn with each other if no male is present so some discus breeders and dealers will sell you a pair of females.  If you are going to buy a pair and spend upwards of $500 ask them for photos or see the fry on them yourself.

3. Visual Sexing there are many ways in which discus can be sexed however none are 100% accurate most are 60% at the most so you can try the different ways. You will find a list of these on this site.

If all goes well your discus will spawn and once the fry have become free swimming they will find their first nourishment from the sides of their parents (a wonderful sight). After about 5 days, start feeding the newly hatched brine shrimp. When young discuses have morphed in to the traditional discus shape, start feeding them special discus fry food for proper growth or you can crush up other commercial foods. Once they get large enough start to feed a good variety of foods such as blood worms and brine shrimp.
